Speakers or loudspeakers (AC) are an extremely important part of a home audio system or home theater. The final quality of music sound depends on the correct choice of acoustics, and it doesn’t even matter what other components you choose – the speakers solve everything.

Depending on the area of application, speakers are divided into several categories. To listen to music, pairs of classical speakers are used, which can differ significantly from each other in size, design, and, of course, cost. Sometimes a subwoofer is added to such systems to expand the range of bass sounds. Multi-channel systems, which include 5 to 8 or more speakers, are used in home theater systems with ambient sound.

Choose speakers for music

When choosing speakers for music, you need to consider several parameters. Traditionally, the main range of reproducible frequencies is considered: the wider it is, the more accurately the acoustics transmit the sounds of instruments and voices. As a rule, good speakers, perfectly reproducing the whole range of sounds, which have a large power and provide maximum quality, are quite expensive. Fortunately, modern technology does not stand still and is able to offer technical solutions that will get great sound, even with small and inexpensive systems. To expand the capabilities of compact and inexpensive speakers, it is highly recommended to add a subwoofer to your system – a specialized speaker for low, bass frequencies. It is important that it is never too late to supplement the system – you can start by buying a stereo pair of speakers, and then start expanding their capabilities. After you choose speakers, you need to check the sound with low BPM songs and high BPM songs. You can use BPMzilla database to find songs with different BPM.

In any case, pay attention to the following parameters of the speakers you like:

In theory, the higher this setting, the louder the speakers can play, but the volume is not always required. In practice, we can say that the power is never too much – more powerful speakers will not only allow you to listen to music louder – the need for this may not be – but will provide a margin that has a very positive effect on overall sound quality.

or so-called impedance; measured in Omaha (Ω, Ohm). The impedance value is not related to the quality or power of the speakers as such, it is just a characteristic that allows you to determine whether the speakers are compatible with your amplifier. Examine the rear panel of the amplifier or receiver and find out which speakers it supports – it must be within the limits indicated there. For example, if the amplifier supports a resistance of 6 to 8 Ω, 4-ohms cannot be connected to it. Some amplifiers provide a column resistance switch; in this case, turn this switch to the correct position before turning it on.

Reproducible frequency range

The wider it is, the better, but we can say that for good music speakers it should be in the range of 50-20,000 Hz. If in your chosen model it is wider – this is a great sign!

To improve the recoil at the highest and lowest frequencies, speaker designers allocate different speakers to reproduce low and high sounds. It is believed that the minimum number is 2 bands, ie one special speaker for high frequencies and another – for medium and low. In the most expensive and high-quality models usually use 3 bands, allocating a special midrange speaker.
The location of the hole of the phase inverter. The phase inverter usually looks like a round hole in the case, the location of which users often do not pay attention. However, this is an important design element that helps ensure good bass sound. It is important to remember that if the phase inverter is on the back panel, they can not be placed close to the wall – it is necessary to provide at least 30-40 cm gap. Otherwise, the bass sounds may deteriorate or they will become quieter.

We choose speakers for home theater

When choosing speakers for your home theater, you can rely on the above tips for choosing “music” speakers, but keep in mind the differences between such systems. The choice should start with determining how many channels your system will contain; usually their number is determined by a multi-channel receiver, which is the heart of the home theater sound system. There are 5.1, 7.1 and even multi-channel systems, but we will consider 5.1, the most popular system with 5 speakers and one subwoofer.

the main component of the system. These are the two main speakers that are to the left and right of the TV screen. The role of front acoustics for home theater is perfect for existing music speakers, as it is this pair of speakers reproduces most of the sounds.

ACOUSTICS surround sound

consisting of at least two rear columns. These speakers are located to the right and left behind the audience and provide the effect of immersion in the sound space of the film. Thanks to them, 3D special effects, explosions, sounds of flying objects and atmospheric, surround sounds sound great.

important for the accurate reproduction of acting dialogues, through it the majority of voices in films are transmitted. It is located directly below or above the TV screen.

specialized subwoofer. In the home theater, it not only expands the range of bass sounds, but also transmits low frequencies for special effects, which are so necessary when watching modern movies. As a rule, it is active, ie it is connected to the power supply from the socket, and to the multichannel receiver through a line output.

Choose a subwoofer

The subwoofer is able to significantly expand the capabilities of the home music system, and in the case of a home theater, and a necessary thing. First of all, note that the subwoofer for home theater and car – completely different things and can never be used instead of each other.

The main selection criteria are power and frequency range.
In order not to complicate the description of the selection, we specify a simple rule: if your front speakers are powerful floor-standing speakers, then you need to take a subwoofer for them more powerful, at least 100 watts. It is better if the range of reproducible frequencies will start from 15-20 Hz. If you use small “shelf” speakers as front speakers, the power of the subwoofer can be small, enough 50-80 watts.

A good active subwoofer for a home theater should be equipped with a line input through which it is connected to the AV receiver. Some models are equipped with high-level inputs, through which the subwoofer is connected between the speakers and the receiver – this scheme is suitable if the receiver does not have a line output for the subwoofer.

Of the subwoofer controls, volume and phase controls should be selected. Setting up the first is very simple and clear: the higher its level, the more bass there will be; moreover, it is important not to overdo it – it is difficult to hear other sounds with too powerful bass. The phase regulator can be stepped (on / off) and smooth. Its purpose is to adjust the subwoofer radiation to the specifics of the specific room in which it is installed and the features of the front acoustics.

After you finally decide on the place of installation, experiment with the installation of the phase: in some position the bass will be denser and clearer, and in some blurred and weaker; accordingly, leave the phase in the position where the sound seems better to you.
